UNICEF : Visit to Laos - May 2000

The Belgian committee of Unicef has just launched a new campaign set to last two years, this time dedicated to the plight of the children in Laos who, deprived of any education in a country that is the poorest in Asia, are also victims of discrimination, disease, handicaps, prostitution and violence.

Axelle Red, Belgian Ambassador to Unicef since 1997, is heavily involved in this project. She went to Laos in January in a personal capacity and returned there again in May with Unicef.

The Limburg songstress spoke of what she saw and experienced there with great sensitivity, and highlighted the lack of any health care in the most backward regions of Laos. The following remark says it all: ‘If I lived there, I wouldn’t be alive today, and neither would my daughter.
